intersecting runways

intersecting runways
Two or more runways that cross or meet within their lengths. An intersecting runway configuration is utilized when there are relatively strong winds during the year from more than one direction. In strong wind conditions, only one runway is normally used. On the other hand, in light wind conditions, both runways may be used simultaneously. Normally, the runway, which is in use for the greater part of the year, is nominated as the instrument runway.
